NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The search is on for “Shadow,” a 110-pound Doberman mix who broke free from his leash and collar during a walk Wednesday night in the Rockaways.
“I’m in very big trouble because my son asked me to watch the dog that was his last request before he left me, ‘Please keep an eye on my dog don’t let anything happen to my dog,’” Jacqueline Durante said.
Durante’s son is Petty Officer Louis Durante, who’s on deployment, but was in the Rockaways on leave when Hurricane Sandy wiped out their home.
Louis Durante, 21, helped fight the fires in Breezy Point, where he’s a volunteer firefighter.
Then his Naval unit was sent to the Rockaways to help with the clean-up. So for weeks, he and his fellow sailors helped the victims of Sandy until they were deployed elsewhere.
Now, his family is asking for the public’s help to find Shadow.
Louis’ fiance, Sara Desin, said she is plastering the area with flyers, desperate to find their dog.
“He doesn’t see him as his dog; he see’s him as his son. He’s a cuddler. He’s the friendliest dog I ever met. He’s scary looking but the biggest mush you ever meet in your entire life,” Desin said.
Jacqueline Durante said Shadow ran straight for the ocean, leaving behind his collar, which had his ID tag. He has no locator chip.
“If there’s a season of miracles, I would pray every day that someone would find the dog,” she said. “Because my son is protecting me every day. I feel like I let him down.”
Petty Officer Durante is scheduled to come home for the holidays next week. His family said finding Shadow would be the best Christmas gift they could give him.
If you see the dog, the family is asking you to contact the 100th Precinct in the Rockaways.
