NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is feeling the heat on Tuesday morning following a dreadful performance against the Titans that ended Gang Green’s playoff hopes once and for all.
The fourth-year player struggled mightily throughout the 2012 campaign, regressing for the second straight season. It all came to a head in a must-win game in Tennessee, as Sanchez embarrassed himself on Monday Night Football. The former first-round pick completed just 13 of 28 passes for 131 yards. He threw a third-down touchdown but tossed four interceptions, was sacked three times and fumbled the football.
Sanchez was criticized heavily by both reporters and fans following the contest, and naturally, the criticism spread to the Twitterverse.
#QBsBetterThanSanchez was trending on Twitter on Tuesday morning, and it remained trending into the afternoon.
It doesn’t get much more humiliating than that.
Twitter users had a field day with the hashtag, using pop culture references to make fun of the quarterback. Some examples included Uncle Rico from “Napoleon Dynamite,” Al Bundy from “Married With Children,” the little kid from the NFL Play 60 commercial with Cam Newton, former New Jersey Net Brian Scalabrine and Lieutenant Dan from “Forrest Gump.”
Other answers included actress Betty White, Jerry “Rev” Harris from “Remember The Titans,” one user’s son (and he noted that he doesn’t even have a son) and ”Steamin” Willie Beamen from “Any Given Sunday.”
“It doesn’t feel good hurting your team like that,” Sanchez told reporters after the game. “It’s not a winning formula. It never feels good. I’ve just got to prepare as the starter and see what happens.”
But Sanchez may not have to worry about starting anytime soon. Head coach Rex Ryan said that he isn’t ready to announce who will start for New York next week when the Chargers visit MetLife Stadium.
In 14 games this season, Sanchez has completed 54.8 percent of passes and thrown 13 touchdowns to 17 interceptions. He’s fumbled the ball eight times and has a rating of 67.9.
