Man Killed In Staten Island House Fire

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 23-year-old man died in a house fire in Staten Island early Saturday.

The fire broke out Saturday morning in a home at 210 Osgood Ave., on the cusp of the Clifton and Park Hill sections of Staten Island, officials said.

As 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg reported, the home was decked out for the holidays, but the fire destroyed their celebration, taking the life of Jameek Champagne just days before Christmas.

"It's like the worst Christmas that you could ever have," one neighbor said. "I just feel sorry for the family."

Firefighters found Champagne's body in a third-floor bedroom. Battalion Chief Richard Callery said the room was incinerated.

"It started in that bedroom," Callery said. "Trying to get upstairs all the way up to the top floor bedroom, and it was extreme fire conditions."

The victim was the father of two small children – a 1-year-old and a 2-month-old.

The fire had been extinguished by the 8 a.m. hour.
