Report: Sanchez Will Be Backup To McElroy

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Mark Sanchez struggled mightily on Monday night in a 14-10 loss at Tennessee, throwing four interceptions and losing the football on New York's final offensive play.

After that poor performance, Rex Ryan named Greg McElroy the starter against the San Diego Chargers, but wouldn't say who would be his backup at that time.

Now reports are saying that Mark Sanchez will be the backup to McElroy. However, if Sanchez, Tebow and McElroy are active, Ryan and the Jets wouldn't be required to announce their No. 2 and No. 3 designations.

Earlier in the week the New York Daily News reported that Tebow, a former first-round pick, who was acquired this offseason to back up Sanchez, will request to be traded or released after the season if McElroy starts the final game of the year.
