Wrongful Convict In Central Park Jogger Case Hit With Assault Charges
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- One of the five men who was wrongly convicted in the 1989 rape of a jogger in Central Park was facing a new assault charge this weekend, after his girlfriend accused him of trying to hit her with a brick.
Corey Wise was arrested Wednesday.
According to court records, the woman said she was quarreling with Wise near the park in October when he hurled the brick at her. She said it landed by her feet.
Wise was freed on $1,500 bail and was due back in court Tuesday.
His lawyer told the New York Daily News the woman fabricated the incident.
Wise was one of five teenagers who were falsely accused, coerced to confess, and then convicted by juries of raping Trisha Meili, the 28-year-old Yale University alumna and Wall Street investment banker who was brutally attacked in Central Park on April 19, 1989.
Four of the defendants spent seven years in prison, and the fifth did 13 years' time.
There were no witnesses or DNA evidence, and Meili had no memory of the attack.
But the story of an interracial gang rape gripped a city where the crime rate had been soaring for years.
The assailant was, in fact, only one person – Matias Reyes, an incarcerated serial rapist and murderer. Thirteen years after the fact, he came forward and DNA linked him to the crime.
