Volunteers Give Back At Annual Christmas Eve Lunch For Homeless

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The 15th annual Christmas Eve lunch for the homeless was held Monday at City Hall restaurant in lower Manhattan.

Latoya from the Flatlands Family Shelter said she had a great time at the celebration.

"It was a beautiful party, beautiful," she told 1010 WINS' Stan Brooks.

"I think it was really cool. I loved the people and everybody was very nice and welcoming," said 15-year-old Fantasia. "The food was very good."

Santa was there to hand out presents to the kids in attendance.

"It's wonderful. Absolutely wonderful," said St. Nick.

Other attendees said the spirit of giving is a great part of Christmas, but said it should not be limited just to the holidays.

"It's great, it's a good thing for the community, for the kids. They're having a great time, they're dancing. It's really nice. They need to do this more often in the city. Keep the people together, make them love each other," a man from Flatlands Family Shelter told Brooks.

Mayor Bloomberg stopped by the gathering to thank volunteers serving the meal and said the message of the event is that people do care.
