Manners Expert Explains The Do's And Don'ts Of Re-Gifting

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Not everybody is in love with every gift that they receive during the holiday season, but it isn't too late to turn unwanted gifts into re-gifts.

"I'm a big fan of re-gifting. We are all so blessed with far more presents and it doesn't mean you might not have gotten something you think someone else could truly love," Thomas Farley of "What Manners Most" told CBS 2's Emily Smith.

Farley recommends re-gifting things like fresh flowers, and new Christmas ornaments. He suggests that re-gifters avoid giving away picture frames, unless they include a personal photo.

He also advises never to re-wrap something that someone gave you from their vacation.

Clothing, Farley said, should only be re-gifted if it has never been worn and if you are sure that it will fit.

Alcohol is also fine to re-gift as long as it has not been opened.

"If you can give somebody something you've been given already, you're saving yourself the expense and the person is none the wiser," Farley said.

Experts also said that if you are in a rush, you can give a gift card instead of re-gifting and that all re-gifts should be unused and in their original packaging.
