Officials: Beached Whale Near Breezy Point Has Died

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A beached whale that washed ashore in Breezy Point has died, wildlife officials confirmed to CBS 2.

The 60-foot-long finback whale was found in grave condition stranded on the bay side of Breezy Point around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The animal had cuts all over its body and was severely emaciated, CBS 2 reported.

The finback whale is the second longest animal in the world, reaching up to 75 feet and can weigh up to 74 tons. Biologists believe the beached whale once weighed about 60 tons, but was about half of that when it was discovered.

Members of the Point Breeze Fire Department had spent the day pumping sea water onto the whale in an effort to keep it alive.

A full necropsy is expected to be performed to determine a cause of death.
