Neighbors Furious At Plan To Halt Weekend 7 Line Service In Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Queens residents will have to find another way to get around, as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority begins scheduled service disruptions on the 7 Subway line.

For the next 13 weekends, there will be no 7 train service between Queensboro Plaza and 42nd Street-Times Square from 11:45 p.m. Fridays until 5 a.m. Mondays.

Community leaders and business owners said three and a half months with no weekend service is unacceptable.

"There is no reason why they cannot space this out, break it up, space it and place it in times where people are not devastated; small businesses are not faced with the prospect of closure," said City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (D-26th).

The MTA implemented a similar plan in 2010, and neighbors are protesting for the second time, according to Van Bramer's office.

The MTA said it realizes service disruptions are an inconvenience, but the agency said the move is necessary to modernize and improve the system.
