1 Dead, 3 Injured When Metro North Train Hits Car In Connecticut
REDDING, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Metro North train slammed into a car on the Danbury line Sunday afternoon, killing one person in the car and leaving the others wounded.
The car was traveling south over the track in Redding when it was struck by the train at about 1:20 p.m., Metro North spokesman Sam Zambuto said. Three people had to be removed from the car, a Subaru with Connecticut license plates, while the fourth was outside of it when emergency crews arrived, according to the New-Times of Danbury.
All four people were taken to Danbury Hospital, where one was pronounced dead, Zambuto said. The person's identity was not released Sunday night.
The two crew members on the train, an engineer and a conductor, were unhurt, authorities said. There were no passengers.
The train had left Danbury and was headed south to Norwalk when the collision happened at a crossing about 150 yards from the Redding station. The train pushed the car about 50 yards before it tumbled down an embankment. The three-car train and the locomotive stopped about 100 yards past the station.
The crossing had flashing lights to indicate an oncoming train, and they were on at the time of the crash, Zambuto said. Authorities were investigating whether speed played a role in the collision.
Train service on the Danbury line has been suspended. Bus service was shuttling passengers between Danbury and South Norwalk.
