Christmas Tree Recycling Begins Wednesday In NYC
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The holiday season is officially behind us now, and it's time to recycle that Christmas tree.
In New York City this New Year's Day, some trees were out on the curb already.
The New York City Department of Sanitation will begin its annual curbside collection and recycling program on Wednesday. Pickups continue through Saturday, Jan. 12.
Those throwing away trees are reminded to remove all tree stands, tinsel, lights and ornaments from trees before tossing them on the curbside for removal. The trees may not be placed in plastic bags.
The pickup will be in progress through Saturday, Jan. 12. After being taken away, the discarded trees will be collected, chipped and made into compost.
The compost will then be processed and spread on parks, ball fields, and community gardens around the city.
The Sanitation Department collects about 140,000 Christmas trees each year.
