First Baby Of 2013 Born At Queens Hospital

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- New York welcomed its first baby of 2013 on Tuesday morning.

Olivia Rose Espinal was born just after midnight at New York Hospital in Queens, her parents told CBS 2's Drew Levinson that they are thrilled.

"I was the luckiest dad in the world, 2013 that was the main thing. I was very excited," said Feddy Pena, of Brooklyn.

Olivia was not supposed to arrive until Jan.5, but during a doctor's appointment on Monday new mother Rosemary Espinal found out that the baby had other plans.

"I had a doctor's appointment at noon, and I was there having a few contractions and they stopped. They restarted about four o'clock in the morning and by six it was time to go," she said.

Six hours later Olivia Rose was born weighing 7 lbs 5 oz. She was delivered at New York Hospital Queens by Dr. Curtis Hardy.

Hardy said he has delivered so many babies "I stopped counting. It's been in the several thousands." But he said he will remember this delivery for the rest of his life.

As soon as Olivia was born, her father made a New Year's resolution.

"To love my daughter as much as I can, and oh my God – I am just speechless," Pena said. "I am happy. I am very proud."

So what's next for the couple, now that they have a New Year's baby? Dad says, how about a Christmas baby? Mom says, we'll see.

CBS 2 is told one other baby was born within an hour of midnight. A little girl was born at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn at 12:54 a.m.
