16-Year-Old Girl Found Shot To Death In Kearny Home

KEARNY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police are investigating the death of a 16-year-old girl who was found shot to death in her home in New Jersey.

Alishia Colon was found shot in the head in the bedroom of her second-floor apartment on Belgrove Drive in Kearny around 6:20 p.m. Thursday, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said.

Colon was babysitting her 7-year-old brother when she was shot, 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg reported.

"Whoever did this don't have no heart, to just come and kill innocent people," friend Brenda Velasquez said. "She was so innocent."

"Nice girl, quiet, never got in a fight with nobody," neighbor Anthony Cane said. "I didn't hear no gunshots."

Earlier in the day, police were called to the area after receiving a report of a street fight involving some of the victim's relatives, prosecutors said.

"When I came out with my friend they were just cursing each other out," one neighbor said.

Colon was not involved in that dispute, prosecutors said.

Police arrested 37-year-old Edwin Mendez, Jr. of Belleville with unlawful possession of a weapon and terroristic threats in connection with the earlier street fight, prosecutors said.

Police are still investigating if there is any connection between the earlier incident and Colon's death.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit at (201) 915-1345 or email hcpo@hcpo.org.

Grief counselors have been called to Kearny High School where Colon was a student.
