NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — In a taping for “The Late Show” Monday, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie poked fun at himself as David Letterman pointed out his own reputation for making fat jokes at the governor’s expense.

During his first appearance with Letterman, Christie walked out onto the stage to the accompaniment of a rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “Thunder Road” by Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra.

During the interview, Letterman remarked, “We’ve made jokes about you – not just one or two; not just ongoing; intermittent, but…”

At that moment, Christie took out a doughnut and began eating it.

“I didn’t know (the interview) was going to be this long,” Christie said.

Christie has termed his girth “fair game” for comedians. Letterman asked him how he actually felt about the subject.

“I only care if you’re funny,” Christie said. “From my perspective, if the joke is funny, I laugh – even if it’s about me. If it’s not funny, I don’t laugh. But I’ve never felt like it was anything that really bugged me all that much, no.”

He pointed out two specific jokes of Letterman’s that he said he likes, despite the jokes being at his expense.

“The first one was, ‘Celebrity birthday today – Chris Christie turns 50. He blew out the candles on his cake, and he wished for another cake,’” Christie said.

“And I don’t know if this is one of your best ones, but I think it’s very topical given what went on [Super Bowl Sunday],” Christie continued. “‘A billion dollars will be spent on potato chips for Super Bowl Sunday, and that’s just at Gov. Christie’s house.”

“The Late Show” airs at 11:35 p.m. on CBS 2.
