NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — An elderly man was struck by an SUV when it jumped the curb in front of the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship location in Midtown Manhattan.
The incident happened at 5th Avenue and 49th Street late Tuesday morning.
Police said an 89-year-old man was seriously injured when the driver of a grey Ford SUV drove from the middle lane onto the sidewalk.[cbs-audio url=”http://cbsnewyork.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/saks-crash-v1-miller-intern1.mp3″ size=”340px” download=”false” name=”Pedestrian Struck After Car Jumps Curb Outside Saks Fifth Avenue Store” artist=”WCBS 880’s Monica Miller Reports”]
Witnesses said they heard what sounded like a blown tire right before the crash.
“We heard the screech, we saw the smoke,” one man told 1010 WINS Juliet Papa. “That’s when the car pretty much went out of control.”
Another witness said a box truck rear-ended the SUV, which then blew a tire and lost control.[cbs-audio url=”http://cbsnewyork.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/saks-3-papa-w37-soc-pweston.mp3″ size=”340px” download=”false” name=”Pedestrian Struck After Car Jumps Curb Outside Saks Fifth Avenue Store” artist=”1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa reports”]
The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he is being treated for head trauma, WCBS 880’s Monica Miller reported. The driver was not injured in the incident, police said.
It’s still unknown exactly why the SUV jumped the curb. Police are investigating.
