Putnam County SPCA Hunts Whoever Shot Cat To Death

BREWSTER, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - There's a cat killer on the loose in Putnam County.

The Putnam County SPCA wants to know who shot a 7-month-old calico cat named Blackfoot to death in the Putnam Lake area of Patterson.

Authorities said Blackfoot's owner reported the cat was shot on Feb. 7 while outside. The shot - either from a high-powered BB gun or a low caliber rifle - paralyzed the cat.

Despite their efforts, vets were unable to save Blackfoot, who died four days later.

"Although many feel that feral cats may be a nuisance, it is a crime to harm these animals," said Chief Ken Ross of the Putnam County SPCA. "Owned cats, under the law are allowed to roam outside, and when someone takes matters into their own hands, not only are they committing animal cruelty, they may end injuring their neighbor's child or pet."

Putnam County SPCA is asking the public for any information about the incident. Anyone with any information is asked to call 845-520-6915, or log on to their website.

Officials said that in August of 2012, the severed head of a brown cat was found in an intersection about a half mile away from the site of this shooting.
