Bellone To Talk Sandy Recovery In Suffolk State Of The County

BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - In his State of the County address tonight, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone is expected to announce the formation of a panel that will examine the best ways to spend federal aid on recovery from superstorm Sandy.

At least one homeowner told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs that it's a good idea.

"Yeah, I mean you go down to the Gulf coast, where they have hurricanes all time and their houses are on stilts and things like that and I think that's all we need to do is, the houses that are on the coast, raise them up a little bit. Make them more hurricane-proof just in case something like this happens again," Josh Huggins on Islip said.

He cited the damage that still remains in places like Lindenhurst.

"You go down by the water, it's still a lot of houses boarded up and things like that that need to be taken care of," he said.

The new panel is expected to consider the purshase of wetlands to create flood zone buffers.
