NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police Sunday were calling an early-morning deadly fire in South Richmond Hill, Queens, suspicious.

The fire broke out in a bodega at 115-18 95th Ave. in Queens around 2:30 a.m., police said. It spread to the apartments above.

After firefighters extinguished the blaze, officers found a 43-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive with burns on his body, police said. The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the fire has been deemed suspicious, but did not indicate exactly what drew them to that conclusion.

The investigation was ongoing Sunday morning.
