Woman, Struck Killed After Car Hits Taxi In Kips Bay

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was struck and killed by a taxi after it was rear-ended early Sunday in Kips Bay.

Police were dispatched at 1:48 a.m. to the junction of Third Avenue and 27th Street. They found the unidentified woman lying at the scene with severe leg trauma.

The woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Police later learned that the driver of a 2010 Honda sedan had just pulled out of a parking spot on Third Avenue, and was trying to merge into northbound traffic.

The driver of the Honda inadvertently rear-ended the taxi, whose driver in turn lost control, spun toward the sidewalk, and hit the woman.

Police do not suspect criminality in the accident. The investigation continued Sunday afternoon.

Police had not released the victim's identity as of mid-afternoon Sunday.
