Off-Duty Essex County Sheriff’s Officer Shot Outside Club In Newark
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — An off-duty sheriff’s officer is recovering after being shot overnight in Newark.
It happened around 2 a.m. at the Mercedes and Mink Lounge on Springfield Avenue.
An Essex County sheriff’s officer was inside the club when he got into some sort of verbal disagreement with another man, CBS 2’s Alice Gainer reported.
Authorities said when the officer went to leave the club, he was confronted by two men outside.
“At this point, we know at least one of the males produced a handgun and started firing at the officer,” said Essex County Chief Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly.
The officer was wounded, but investigators said he returned fire, injuring the two suspects. All three were taken to the hospital.
The officer is expected to be released from the hospital later Friday. The two suspects are in police custody.
