ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Police in the state capital of Albany Sunday evening were searching for a man who stabbed a New York State trooper in the neck in the Empire State Plaza.
CBS affiliate WRGB-TV, Albany, reported the trooper, identified as Rodney Smith, was stabbed in the neck with a large kitchen knife.
The stabbing happened on the concourse level of Empire State Plaza, which was shut down following the incident.
Smith was patrolling the concourse around 3:15 p.m. Sunday, when the suspect walked up and initially began a conversation with him, WRGB reported. The suspect then stabbed Smith several times with the steak knife as the trooper checked his identification, the station reported.
Smith suffered wounds the left side of his neck, his face, arms and hands. After a brief struggle, the man ran off with Smith’s radio, WRGB reported.
Police said Smith called for help by phone, and was rushed to Albany Medical Center. He underwent surgery and was expected to make a full recovery, WRGB reported.
“Our troopers can find themselves in dangerous and sometimes life threatening situations on any given day,” said State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico said in the WRGB report. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Trooper Smith’s family.”
Trooper Smith is a 15-year veteran of the New York State Police Department.
