Off-Duty Newark Police Officer Shoots, Kills Robber

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- An off-duty Newark police officer shot and killed a robber at the store where he was working as a security guard Sunday afternoon.

Just after 3 p.m. Sunday, the veteran officer was arriving for work as a security guard at the Twin City Supermarket, at 611 Broadway in Newark, only to find that the store was being robbed by a gun-wielding bandit.

The officer identified himself and tried to arrest the robber, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's office. When the suspect brandished his handgun, the officer fired one shot and struck the suspect.

The suspect ran off through an alleyway onto Lincoln Avenue, as he bled profusely. He ultimately collapsed, and was arrested in the side yard at 171 Lincoln Ave., prosecutors said.

A witness, Ramon, described the chaotic scene.

"He ran, you know, he kept on going. He died over there by Lincoln Avenue. That was it," he said.

Witnesses said paramedics performed CPR on the robber at the scene.

The suspect was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead a short time afterward, prosecutors said.

The officer was also hospitalized for stress-induced trauma.

The incident was under investigation Sunday night my Essex County prosecutors and the Newark Police Department Internal Affairs Division.
