SOUND OFF: Your Reaction To The Election Of Pope Francis

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina has been elected the new leader of the Catholic church and has chosen the name Pope Francis.

The 76-year-old archbishop of Buenos Aires is the first ever pope from the Americas as well as the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium.

Crowds in St. Peter's Square erupted in cheers after a cardinal proclaimed "We have a pope!" and revealed the identity of the new pontiff.

The world had been watching and waiting since the cardinals began their conclave on Tuesday to elect a new pope following the stunning resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

There had been no clear front-runner for a new pope but buzz had swirled around many including New York's Cardinal Timothy Dolan.
