PORT CHESTER, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Excitement and curiosity filled the hearts of Catholics attending morning Mass at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Port Chester.

People there already seem to feel a kinship with Pope Francis because of his common touch and lifestyle.

One parishioner pointed out that as Cardinal, he didn’t use his palace, lived in a modest apartment, and used public transportation instead of a limousine.

“There’s more poor people in this world than rich people,” he said. “So, you’ve got to take care of poor people.”

“I think he’s a good priest,” said one woman.

“He’s humble and simple. I don’t know too much about him, but I wish him luck,” said another.

“So I hope everything will be alright. I wish him luck,” said one man.

“It don’t matter if he comes in Italian or German. It don’t matter,” said one parishioner.

Each of those people had a different accent. Mass is said in five languages at this church, including Polish and Spanish.

It’s hoped to the Argentine Pope of Italian decent can have universal appeal to all.
