Giants GM: Louis Murphy Adds 'Another Dimension' To Offense

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — With leading receiver Victor Cruz still unsigned, the Giants have added Louis Murphy.

New York on Tuesday confirmed the signing of the speedy receiver who played last season with Carolina. The five-year veteran has 115 receptions for 1,707 yards and seven touchdowns, including 25 catches with the Panthers in 2012.

"I think he's going to add another dimension to our offense," Giants general manager Jerry Reese told SiriusXM NFL Radio. "We have a scout named Jeremiah Davis and he talks about guys being a knife. This guy is a knife. This guy can take the top off your defense."

Reese added: "(Murphy is) an interesting guy. He gives us a different dimension in our offense. If we have the same guys, if we have (Hakeem) Nicks back healthy and we have Cruz back, this guy gives you a deep threat that we haven't had. We haven't had a guy who can run like this guy."

Murphy was Oakland's fourth-round draft choice in 2009. As a rookie, he scored four touchdowns.

"I thank God and the NY @Giants for this opportunity for me and my family," Murphy tweeted Tuesday. "We are thankful. Proud to be apart of the Giants family. #timetowork."

The Giants have now signed seven free agents from other teams. In addition to Murphy, they have added placekicker Josh Brown (Cincinnati), linebacker Dan Connor (Dallas), defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins (Philadelphia), tight end Brandon Myers (Oakland), safety Ryan Mundy (Pittsburgh) and cornerback Aaron Ross (Jacksonville).

The Giants have made a first-round tender to Cruz, meaning they will receive a first-round draft pick if he signs elsewhere and the Giants do not match the offer.

"It is inappropriate for me to talk too much about Victor," Reese said. "One thing I can say is he is a terrific young man and a terrific football player. We are hoping for that situation to work out."

Was Murphy a great addition? Sound off in the comments...
