Kangaroo Meat On The Menu At Astoria Eatery

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- If you've never tried kangaroo meat, you can change that just by hopping over to Astoria, Queens.

As 1010 WINS' Holli Haerr reported, the Thirsty Koala, at 35-12 Ditmars Blvd., is serving kangaroo steaks, burgers and sliders.

Debra Woodside is one of the adventurous diners who decided to dine on kangaroo.

"When the waiter said about the kangaroo, I figured, let me try it," she said.

Thirsty Koala co-owner Katherine Fuchs said she and her colleagues opened the Australian restaurant in December, and last month, introduced kangaroo.

"People are trying it for the first time, because I think they're looking to experience different food sensations," she said.

Debra seemed to like it.

"It's very, very good," she said.

The Web site BuyExoticMeats.com says kangaroo meat is high in protein and low in cholesterol, with less than 2 percent fat. The site calls it lean and tender for a red meat, "with a touch of natural sweetness."
