NJ Child Sex Assault Suspect Arrested In Texas

ELIZABETH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A New Jersey man who fled to Honduras last summer after allegedly impregnating a 13-year-old girl has been captured in Texas.

Former Plainfield resident Israel Romero, 39, was arrested Tuesday night as he tried to cross into Texas from Mexico, said Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow.

Authorities believe Romero had been in Honduras since fleeing the country in June 2012 after he was accused of sexually assaulting the girl at his home, Romankow said.

Officers discovered Romero missing when they went to arrest him, but tracked him to a village in Honduras, Romankow said.

The U.S. Marshals Service monitored his movements, leading to his arrest, Romankow said.

Romero will be extradited to New Jersey in the coming days, Romankow said. Bail has been set at $1.75 million.

Romero is charged with two counts of first degree aggravated sexual assault against a minor and two counts of second degree sexual assault against a minor.
