SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - It’s a very busy time for business owners in the Hamptons, as they prepare for what is for many their only season – the summer season.

Small businesses there are scrambling to be ready.

“Setting up the store, hiring staff, and shipping everything in. It’s a long process,” Lizzy Wilks, who runs the boutique C Wonder in Southampton, told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs.

These shop owners get one shot at success, according to Wilks.

She said it all hinges on warm sunny weekends and big summer crowds.

“If you miss your three months of summer, you’re not going to succeed, for sure,” she said.

Shop owners there said even just a few bad weekends can make the difference between success and failure.

One said that you do all you can, but, in the end, Mother Nature decides.
