Students Hope Rutgers Dance Marathon Outshines Hoops Scandal

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Hundreds of Rutgers students have been dancing through the night for charity.

The annual Rutgers University Dance Marathon is going on at the school's now-infamous practice basketball court.

Greg, a student from Edison, has been on his feet since 10 on Saturday morning.

"You can't sit down or anything, so you have to find ways to create new energy," he told WCBS 880's Monica Miller. "On the same floor that the nation knows as a place where terrible things happen."

The Dance Marathon is a fundraiser for the Embrace Kids Foundation, an organization to help children with cancer and their families. Last year, participants raised about $450,000 and are on target to eclipse that total this year.

About a thousand students raised money for the event and 600 or so will be on their feet for 32 hours, dancing and doing what they can to stay on their feet.

Jessica, a junior at Rutgers, said she's not concerned if the athletic department may be casting a negative image of the university.

"I don't really care what they think. I mean, this is my school, I love it," she told Miller.

The 32-hour marathon comes to an end at 6 p.m. Sunday evening.
