Report: Yankee Stadium Being Discussed As Possible Venue To Host Rangers Game
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The 2014 Winter Classic will be at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Jan. 1.
But more outdoor NHL games could be on the horizon.
And Tri-State Area hockey fans could be in for a treat.
“Yankee Stadium and Dodger Stadium are being discussed as possible venues with the Kings and Rangers as host teams, according to two league executives and a television executive familiar with the planning,” Newsday wrote on Monday night.
Over 20 hockey teams have requested to host outdoor games, according to the newspaper. Because the Winter Classic occurs just once a year, the league might decide to hold two more outdoor games — one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast — per season, according to Newsday. An outdoor game would also be held in Canada.
The NHL has been in talks with the Yankees for years, according to Newsday, but no event at the Stadium has ever been given the go-ahead because the NCAA’s Pinstripe Bowl has been a roadblock. But, as the newspaper reported, Yankee Stadium could host a Rangers game in late January, which would solve that problem and avoid a conflict.
If an outdoor hockey game is to be held in the Bronx, both the Islanders and Devils would want to play the Rangers, the newspaper reported.
Both fans and players have really taken to the Winter Classic, which was canceled this season because of the NHL lockout.
“I can see why they might want more games,” Rangers forward Darroll Powe, who played for the Flyers in the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park, told Newsday. “I enjoyed it.”
The first Winter Classic was held at Ralph Wilson Stadium in 2008. It was held at Wrigley Field in 2009, Fenway Park in 2010, Heinz Field in 2011 and Citizens Bank Park in 2012.
