NYC Father, Son Sentenced To Jail Time, Probation For Animal Cruelty

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New York City father and son have both plead guilty to animal cruelty charges for beating a black cat to death with a stick last July.

Prosecutors said Thursday that father Jean Roger Murat and his son Robenson Murat will each be sentenced to 30 days in jail, five years of probation and will be prohibited from owning any animals as part of the plea deal.

Prosecutors said the men tried to discard the dead animal on the street, then threw it inside a bag and tossed it into the garbage.

A witness called authorities, and investigators from the ASPCA and police retrieved the cat. Authorities say they found blood, fibers and the broken stick in their Brooklyn attic.

Information on attorneys for both Murats was not immediately available.
