Ex-De Blasio Campaign Staffer Exposed For Offensive Tweets

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A staffer for mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio has left his position, after being exposed for sending hate messages on social media.

As CBS 2's John Slattery reported, de Blasio, now the city's public advocate, just had the volunteer staffer resign after he tweeted the messages.

The campaign confirmed that the now-departed staffer issued the tweets, and a campaign source identified him as Anthony Baker. More than one tweet was anti-Semitic, including one a month ago regarding the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

"AIPAC makes me want to be a Nazi," he tweeted

He also tweeted, ""I need the best goddamn-Jew-lawyer money can buy."

Last year, Baker tweeted, "In BKB Park today taking in the Sun (GOD) + signing copies of my new book, Was Columbus a Homo or Was He Just a Jew? NOW in KINDLE #pride."

The de Blasio campaign also confirmed that the staffer lashed out at the presumed frontrunner in the mayoral race, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a strong pro-choice advocate.

"No one wants to touché your vagina, Speaker," he tweeted.

And in another tweet, he wrote, "Kill the police."

After the tweets came to light, Baker resigned from his post, and de Blasio issued this statement:

"Nothing can excuse anti-Semitic remarks and vulgar insults about women. I am disgusted and shocked by these outrageous comments," de Blasio said in the statement.

CBS 2 was unable to contact ex-staffer. But Slattery reported the incident once again shows the danger of social media and how it can hurt careers.

Last month, another worker was reprimanded by the de Blasio campaign who engaged in what were termed, "vulgar tweets."
