NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Next month’s Five Boro Bike Tour will go on as planned, but without the fiery pyrotechnics that mark the starting line.
Promotional posters for the May 5 event featuring a picture of pyrotechnics above riders are also being removed in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings.
“We want to be sensitive to the tragedy,” Bike New York CEO Ken Podziba told the Daily News.
The posters which appear at bus shelters, subway stations, and other areas across the city were to be removed starting Wednesday.
The event will likely see heightened security and an increased police presence following Monday’s attack.
“Our hearts go out to everyone in Boston dealing with this tragedy. At this time of sadness and uncertainty, we want to assure riders, volunteers and spectators of the upcoming TD Five Boro Tour that we are working closely with out partners in NYC government to ensure the tour will be a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone,” Podziba said in a statement.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Tuesday the city is “re-evaluating” security for major events such as the bike tour and this weekend’s 5K run/walk to the Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum and 4-mile race in Central Park.
