84-Year-Old Woman Killed, Son Injured In Bronx Fire

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are investigating a fire that left an 84-year-old woman dead and her 45-year-old son seriously injured.

The fire broke out around 7:40 a.m. Tuesday at a home on Ampere Avenue in the Bronx, police said.

"She couldn't come down the stairs, she was not in the best of health, so she couldn't make it out," neighbor Chris Morrero told 1010 WINS.

Firefighters found the victims on the second floor suffering from burns and smoke inhalation, police said.

They were taken to Jacobi Hospital where the 84-year-old woman was pronounced dead.

Her son remains hospitalized in serious condition, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
