When you get here, you'll find an awful lot of beachfront in this 203-acre park on Long Island Sound.

Shade trees and lawns invite a perfect place for a picnic, plus there are tables and grills, It's a great setup for a family gathering.

Gov. Dan Malloy can attest to that.

"I grew up here for much of my early life. My whole big extended family, all my cousins and uncles and aunts, we would go to Sherwood Island on the fourth of July and we'd have to get in line very early and there'd be a mad dash when the park opened so that you could go get some benches together and have your cookout," Malloy told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau. "It brings back great memories."

The park is also home to the state's 9/11 memorial.

Later in the afternoon, after a nice shower in the big bathhouse, you might want to consider dinner downtown at a nice restaurant.

Many of them offer casual dining with very good food.

Sherwood Island is open every day from 8 in the morning until sunset.
