Brooklyn Woman Claims Dog Found In Superstorm Sandy Is Hers

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The owner of a dog rescued in Brooklyn during superstorm Sandy has apparently come forward.

On Wednesday, the 6-year-old lab/retriever mix known as Midnight was finally up for adoption after receiving medical treatment and being quarantined for six months to make sure he didn't have rabies.

Dozens of people inquired about adopting the dog, but they might not get the chance now.

Robert Misseri, president of the group Guardians of Rescue, said an East Flatbush woman claims Midnight is her dog Gucci that ran away from her yard during Sandy when a gate flew open.

"We got a call this morning, we do believe it's the owner of the dog," Misseri said.

The woman's claim must be verified before she can be reunited with the dog.

Misseri said the organization has some concerns and are trying to find out why the woman did not come forward sooner and pick up the dog at Animal Care & Control after flyers were put up around the neighborhood looking for the dog's rightful owner.
