Clifton Cop Injured When Police Chase Ends In Crash

CLIFTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A police chase in Clifton overnight ended in a crash that sent an officer to the hospital.

Investigators spent hours marking up the street covered with skid marks and debris at the intersection of Clifton and Colfax avenues.

Around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, police said a chase started when an officer tried to pull over the driver of a car that was weaving across lanes of traffic.

When a supervising sergeant responded as back up, the suspect slammed into his police cruiser, police said.

Donna Franko and her brother heard the thunderous crash and jumped out of bed to see the twisted vehicles right outside their home.

"That hour in the morning, you don't want to hear that cause you never know what it is," Franko said.

"I heard a big thing, sounded like an explosion," resident George Priester said.

The suspect then tried to get away on foot, police said.

"I heard the cops running and chasing someone and saying 'stop or we'll shot, stop or we'll shoot' and I guess they must have got him because they stopped," said Priester.

The suspect was eventually arrested and faces several charges including assault for allegedly attacking the officer who chased him down on foot and arrested him.

One officer was taken to the hospital in serious condition with a heady injury but was later released. Another officer and the suspect were also treated for minor injuries.
