YAPHANK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A motorcyclist was killed Sunday afternoon in a crash in Yaphank, Long Island.

Michael Luthy, 34, of Medford, was riding his 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle north on Sills Road in Yaphank around 2:40 p.m. Sunday, according to Suffolk County police. His motorcycle collided with a 2002 Mercury sport-utility vehicle headed along Expressway Drive North, and driven by Israel Berger Carrera-Garcia, 38, of Flanders, police said.

Luthy was thrown off the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene by a Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office physician assistant, police said.

Carrera-Garcia suffered minor injuries when his airbag deployed, and was examined at the scene by an emergency medical technician, police said.

Police impounded both vehicles for a safety check.

The investigation continued Sunday evening, and detectives asked that anyone who might have witnessed the crash call the Suffolk County police Sixth Squad at (631) 854-8652, or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 220-TIPS.
