Man Carjacked, Run Over With Own SUV In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A man suffered broken legs Monday morning two assailants carjacked his sport-utility vehicle and him over in Newark.

As 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg reported, the incident happened on Helen Place just off Sanford Avenue around 5:30 a.m.

Like every other morning, Andrew Smith Sr. had gotten up early Monday to take his wife to work. He was warming up the car on his driveway when son Andrew Jr. said two men got out of another vehicle and tried to jack his father's.

"My father, I guess he's trying to fight for his rights; his car, which any man would fight for his car if it's being stolen," Andrew Smith Jr. said.

Smith Sr., 51, was run over by his own SUV in his very own driveway.

Shavon lives next door.

"The screams were horrifying, I was actually crying because it was scary," she said.

The car slammed through the fence and onto her lawn. The suspects ran off.

Andrew Sr. was rushed to the University Hospital in Newark with extensive injuries. His legs were broken, but his condition was not available Monday afternoon.
