Want A Happy Mother's Day For Mom? Then Watch What You Buy

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mother's Day is coming up this weekend, and if you are still looking for ways to make mom feel special, there are some things you do not want to do.

As CBS 2's Cindy Hsu reported Wednesday, while most moms just want to be appreciated, there are some Mother's Day gifts that just don't work. Marsha Bernstein remembered one.

"Some sort of like gadget that my husband buys two of and tries to disguise it as a Mother's Day gift, but it's really something for him," Bernstein said.

She said sleeping late and time to herself is what she really wants.

Marie Brown said fake flowers were a flop.

"I don't like artificial flowers, fake flowers," she said.

Parenting experts Denise Albert and Melissa Musen Gerstein – known as The Moms, advise thinking ahead.

"Anything you find at the cash register, do not buy -- a picture at the cash register, a teddy bear, little chocolates," Albert said. "It tells you that no one thought about you and it's a last-minute thing; it's an afterthought. I don't want to be an afterthought."

Another "don't" is to rely on mom to plan her day.

"No planning for mom -- mom does the playdates, mom does the meals, mom does all the coordination to keep the household running, so when she wakes up in the morning, 'Go! You guys plan everything!'"

Julio Garcia said he plans to stay away from the appliances when shopping for his mother.

"A blender, I gave my mother a blender," Garcia said. "She just looked at me and said, 'You should have given me a card or something.'"

And when it comes to a card, don't just sign your name. Take to the time to write a personal note.

"I think I bought (my wife) a set of knives once -- that didn't go over very big. Perhaps a Cuisinart -- that didn't go over very big," said Ralph Hotchkiss. "So now I go to fancy stuff."

And if you plan on buying clothing for Mother's Day, be careful. Whenever you're dealing with size, it can get a little sensitive if you're way off.

Now as far as all you wonderful moms out there go, if there's something you really want for Mother's Day, let your loved ones know what it is. Chances are all they want to do is make you happy.
