Actress Cicely Tyson Discusses Tony Award Nomination

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Legendary actress Cicely Tyson is back on Broadway in "The Trip To Bountiful."

Tyson is nominated for a best lead actress in a play Tony Award.

This marks Tyson's first time back on the Great White Way since 1983.

"The work is very hard but that's, for me, the gratification," Tyson told CBS 2's Dana Tyler.

Tyson has appeared on Broadway seven other times.

The Harlem native was nominated for an Oscar for her role in 1973's "Sounder," and won an Emmy award the following year.

"The Trip To Bountiful" also stars Vanessa Williams and Cuba Gooding, Jr. and has had its run on Broadway extended until Labor Day weekend.

The show, playing at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, garnered a total of four Tony Award nominations.

"I'm looking forward to the whole event and sharing it with everyone," Tyson told Tyler.

The Tonys will air on Sunday, June 9 on CBS 2 HD.
