Bullet Ricochets Into Bedroom Of 12-Year-Old Harlem Girl

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 12-year-old Harlem girl is recovering after being grazed by a bullet while studying in her bedroom Monday night.

The bullet ricocheted off a fire escape, pierced a window and then landed on the child's neck, CBS 2 reported.

The girl said she felt a burning sensation after hearing the window shatter.

"By the time I got up I guess the bullet smashed into my hair," the girl said. "I was scared and I was just thinking why could this happen to a normal family?"

"I was very nervous and scared, but once I checked the back of her neck and saw there was no blood and no injury it calmed me down a little bit," the girl's mother said.

The child was treated for a burn.

Her parents have rearranged the furniture to move her bed away from the window.
