Woman Charged In Murder Of 12-Year-Old Jersey City Boy

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A 25-year-old Rahway woman has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old boy in Jersey City last week, Hudson County Acting Prosecutor Gaetano Gregory announced Thursday.

Janice Everett is charged with felony murder and two counts of armed robbery in the death of Gywan Levine, Jr., Gregory said. She is also charged with fraudulent use of a credit card.

The boy was gunned down last Friday on Rutgers Avenue while playing basketball with his dad, who was shot in the leg.

News of the arrest came on the same day as the boy's wake and funeral. Gywan Levine, Sr., was released from the hospital Thursday to bury his son.

"It's hard on him, but we're going to get through it together," the boy's aunt Tameika Levine said.

Investigators believe robbery was the motive in the shooting and that Everett was part of a crew that was behind at least one other robbery in Jersey City on the day of the shooting, Gregory said.

Investigators are now looking for at least two men.

One is described as a black man, between 20 and 30 years old, standing between 5-feet-11-inches and 6-feet tall, with a medium build and bald or low-cropped hair.

The other man is described as a black man, between 20 and 30 years old, standing between 5-feet-9-inches and 6-feet tall, with a medium build.

"I hope they get life because I'm never going to see my nephew again," Tameika Levine said. "I shouldn't have to bury my nephew, my nephew should be burying me."

Bail on the felony murder was set at $250,000 cash or bond and bail on the robbery was set at $100,000 cash or bond. Everett was due in court Thursday afternoon.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit at (201) 915-1345.
