Paddle Boarder Pulled From Water By Suffolk County Police A Mile Off-Shore

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A paddle boarder has been pulled from the water by the Suffolk County Police Department.

Brian Hopkins realized something was wrong when he started to drift further from shore during a paddle boarding trip off of Fire Island.

Hopkins called 911 shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday and told them that he needed help.

Officers from Marine and Aviation elements of the Suffolk County Police Department encountered eight foot tall waves as they searched for Hopkins, who was eventually located a mile south of Fire Island Lighthouse.

Hopkins maintained communication with dispatchers and a helicopter operated by Sgt Eugene Sengstacken and Officer Tammy Coniglio hovered over his location as marine units closed in on the scene.

Once on board the marine craft Hopkins was treated for hypothermia and transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.
