NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — John Tortorella was defiant in stating that the New York Rangers didn’t take a step back when they were knocked out of the Stanley Cup playoffs in the second round.
General manager Glen Sather thought otherwise and fired the combative coach on Wednesday.
The Rangers’ announcement came shortly after WFAN radio’s Mike Francesa broke the news.
“I don’t know what happened,” Francesa said. “I do know there was some either difference of opinion, argument, fight that really has festered in the last 48 hours — difference of philosophy, difference of opinion, I don’t know exactly what to tell you. All I know is that Tortorella is out as Ranger coach.”
