Jesus, Mary Statues Desecrated On Grounds Of Church In Bay Ridge

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Officials want to find whoever desecrated two statues at a Bay Ridge church.

The statues of the Virgin Mary and Jesus on the crucifix were found with "X"s painted on them at St. Anselm's Roman Catholic Church.

Both statues were outside of the church. One is located in a prayer garden; the other is located on the corner of 4th Avenue and 82nd Street.

The Virgin Mary statue had the X painted across its neck. The statue of Jesus had the X painted on its hip.

State Sen. Martin Golden offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible.

"I can tell you that we will not stand for such acts of religious intolerance in our community, and I stand with my fellow St. Anselm's parishioners in denouncing this cowardly act," Golden said. "We must bring this individual to justice and make sure that no further acts are committed at other houses of worship in our neighborhood."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the 68th Precinct at (718) 439-4211 or Senator Golden's office at (718) 238-6044.
