NEW YORK (WLNY) -- Is laughter really the best medicine?

Research says it can improve both our mental and physical health.

Susan Sparks is a preacher, a stand-up comic and author of Laugh Your Way To Grace. She joined us on The Couch to talk about how humor helped her win her battle with breast cancer.

Sparks said laughter was an unexpected medicine during her illness.

"I found humor to be a real healer in that time," she said. "It's a physical healer. When you take air in to laugh, I find later that it lowers your blood pressure, it boosts your immune system, it actually improves your heart and lung function, it also releases endorphins like when you exercise."
