LONG BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Structural engineers were set to inspect an apartment building in Long Beach where Five people were injured when a balcony collapsed.

Residents of the old two-story brick apartment building are being told to stay off the balconies after Monday night’s collapse down on to a vacant patio below.

Amazingly, the injuries were only minor, but resident William Filquist told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs that, a few weeks ago, his balcony also crumbled.

“My porch collapsed and I fell down on it. I’m sitting here, this came down, you can see all the new cement. All this came down,” he told Xirinachs.

The fire commissioner says the building does appear to have structural issues and engineers were being brought in to assess the situation.

Until then, the balconies are off limits.
