Man Killed, Entire Family Injured In North Patchogue Head-On Crash

NORTH PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man was killed this weekend, following a head-on crash that also injured a couple and their baby.

John Bertuzzi, 72, was headed north on North Ocean Avenue in North Patchogue in his 2008 Kia, when he crossed over into the southbound lane near Shaber Road and slammed into a 2010 Volkswagen around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Suffolk County police said.

The driver of the car Bertuzzi hit -- Louise Cervelli, 32 – was headed down the road with her husband, Garrett Cervelli, 35, and their son, 13 months.

Bertuzzi, of Middle Island, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Louise Cervelli, of Coram, was rushed by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was reported in serious condition.

Garrett Cervelli and the baby were taken by ambulance to Brookhaven, where the father was being treated for internal injuries Sunday night, and the child was treated and released for minor injuries.

Police late Saturday were trying to determine whether Bertuzzi might have suffered from a medical condition that caused the crash.
