Paul McCartney Performs At Barclays Center For The First Time

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Barclays Center in Brooklyn was rocking Saturday night, as Sir Paul McCartney performed at the stadium for the very first time.

About 16,000 fans turned out to see McCartney, 70, who was in town for his "Out There" tour, according to a Rolling Stone review. It was McCartney's first performance in New York City since he appeared at the 12-12-12 benefit for Superstorm Sandy victims last December at Madison Square Garden.

The event continued a legendary run of McCartney concerts in New York, including a Yankee Stadium doubleheader in 2011, and an inaugural three-play at Citi field in 2009. The run stretches all the way back to the first concert at Shea Stadium, which was performed by the Beatles in 1965.

The set list included the familiar Beatles and solo numbers that McCartney has played at most of his concerts over the years, along with some Beatles deep cuts he has brought to the stage for the first time as part of his current tour.

Among them were three songs McCartney originally sang himself -- "All Together Now," "Lovely Rita," and "Your Mother Should Know" – and two originally sung by John Lennon – "Eight Days a Week," and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" – the latter of which McCartney performed along with the montage of sampled calliope music from the original 1967 recording.

A Gothamist review of the concert noted that McCartney took a nostalgic tone during the concert, with anecdotes about Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, and tributes to Lennon with "Here Today," the late Linda McCartney with "Maybe I'm Amazed," George Harrison with "Something," and producer Phil Ramone with "Another Day."

And Rolling Stone's Andy Greene wrote that McCartney has a tough schedule as he moves on to Bonnaroo next week as his worldwide tour continues. But Greene said McCartney "lives for" the hectic tours, and: "Crazy as it sounds, he very well might pull a Chuck Berry and still be at this late into his eighties. Why the hell not?"

McCartney will return for another concert at the Barclays Center at 8 p.m. Monday.
